"Knowledge and Action - Climate Change Impacts in Asian Cities and Ways to Adapt" - A short film
In this video, city officials, citizens, scientists and ICLEI experts from India, the Philippines and Europe share their reflections on the consequences of climate change at local level. The video captures a number of stories on how local governments and stakeholders in these two Asian countries deal with these consequences by working with researchers and various local stakeholders. It particularly emphasises the importance of good communication, forward planning and simple actions to support communities in coping with climate change impacts in increasingly difficult urban conditions.
This video was produced in the context of the ICLEI-led AsianCitiesAdapt project in which several ICLEI offices worked together with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research to support adaptation planning processes in eight cities throughout India (Kochi, Howrah, Madurai and Visakhapatnam) and the Philippines (San Fernando, Tuguegarao, Baguio and Dagupan). AsianCitiesAdapt served two main purposes: At city level, each local government involved assessed its main climate change vulnerabilities together with a group of key stakeholders and with support by the participating research institutes. At scientific level, the research partners developed climate change scenarios that contributed to the local planning processes. At the same time, their research was also informed by locally compiled data and information.
In order to encourage and guide other local governments in Asia to embark on their own path of local climate change adaptation, the project produced, amongst others, the manual Local governments championing adaptation to climate change – A primer for decision-makers in Asian cities. To share the insights gained by the eight cities participating in the project, this video reflects the experiences and lessons learned from the project activities.
AsianCitiesAdapt was part of the International Climate Initiative, which is supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety based on a decision of the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany. This short film was authored and produced by Ephraim Broschkowski and Bernd Hezel of the Climate Media Factory.
